A New Model for Local Manufacturing

Why Garage Shops?

Today’s employment landscape faces persistent gaps. Despite significant public investment in job training and employment programs, many Canadians struggle with underemployment and barriers to meaningful work. Traditional job creation initiatives can be costly for taxpayers and, in some cases, deliver limited long-term impact.

Whereas many large-scale job programs involve hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars per placement, Garage Shops fosters job creation and entrepreneurship for approximately $20,000 per business, including:

  • $10,000 for converting a residential garage into a compliant, safe business space

  • $10,000 for essential equipment and startup support

In contrast, Canadian governments have invested tens of billions in economic and job creation programs. For example, an estimated $158 billion spent on green economy and related initiatives over the past decade resulted in roughly 68,000 jobs (approximately $2.32 million per job). The Garage Shops model can create opportunities for local businesses and jobs for approximately $20,000 per participant.

This represents a cost-effective alternative that empowers entrepreneurs close to home, builds community economic activity, and leverages grassroots enterprise rather than one-off large expenditures.

Garage Shops reframes investment in jobs as investment in entrepreneurs, families, and local economies.

How It Works: Transforming Your Garage

  • An additional $10,000 grant supports startup equipment and operational essentials (e.g., ovens, tools, craft stations, workbenches, etc.).

3. Business Development & Mentorship

  • Participants receive access to local business mentorship and micro-enterprise training.

4. Civic Integration Pathway

  • Municipalities adopt a universal special provision for Garage Shops through AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario) endorsement, enabling consistent policy adoption across towns and cities.
